The Importance of Wrestling in BJJ

The Importance of Wrestling in BJJ Wrestling is one of the oldest forms of grappling, there are techniques in wrestling that have been around for hundreds and thousands of years.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a relatively new martial art when compared.  The essence and core of BJJ has been around for hundreds of years, but what we see today in competitions- such as the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation and the ADCC- is a relatively new form of martial art and sport.  Wrestling is one of, if not, the best grappling art that you can cross train with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for several reasons.  Wrestling can help you develop your BJJ game and takedowns, it can help you develop your base and tenacity, it can increase your awareness and cardio, and overall it will make you better as a martial artist. How Wrestling Can Help Your BJJ Technique Wrestling can help you develop your BJJ technique in so many different ways.  There are so many similarities between wrestling and BJJ that it is a

Gordon Ryan on Andre Galvao: ‘He’s mediocre everywhere’

“Now [Galvao] has to actually show up,” Ryan said. “He’s in a kind of tough spot, if he shows up he’s gonna get submitted and if he doesn’t show up then everyone is gonna think he’s a loser and he’s afraid.” “It was pretty much how I thought it was gonna go,” Ryan said. “I didn’t expect Felipe to break mentally that fast and get exhausted like he did, probably because he was partying in Mykonos like two weeks before he had to go to ADCC so that was probably a big part of it, because he’s an unprofessional s***bag.” Ryan then commented on Galvao’s strengths and weaknesses as an opponent. He’s not really impressive anywhere besides the fact that he has good cardio, he keeps going, and that’s really about it. His jiu-jitsu is not great. He has really good quality of movement, he moves his body well. He can move fast in and out, he can move fast side to side, he can invert, he can do all the stuff you need. But technically, in the standing position he doesn’t look great, his hand fightin

ADCC Champion Jeff Monson Calls Out Gordon Ryan

And in a comment to Ryan’s post, Monson further clarified his call-out: For those saying I’m looking for a payday, you should hush yourselves- you obviously don’t know anything about me. When you feel you’re the best at something, when you love the fight, it’s in your DNA to seek the best to beat. For a long time I was competing in and winning grappling world championships and every grappling tournament in between as a hobby while I worked as a psychologist and fought mma as paying jobs. That’s my point. I was training everyday to be a fighter (besides the psychology work) not training for grappling, but was still the best. Yes, it is a call out but it’s a compliment- if I didn’t think Gordon had a claim at being the best ever I wouldn’t bother. Gordon- we can set a date and I’ll come to the gym and we can have a match with Renzo (he’s a good friend) as the ref. I know everyone in the world wants a bite out of you and you should be honored the grappling world thinks that highly of you.

Dean Lister "I wouldn’t „suggest“ to become only a foot lock specialist"

First of all, I wouldn’t focus specifically on heel hooks, because they are something that must be done responsibly; in order not to hurt yourself or your training partners. You should study all leglock variants and you should learn how to combine them with sweeps from the bottom and with guard passing from the top. I also wouldn’t „suggest“ to become only a foot lock specialist, because a real submission fighter cannot neglect the other 50% of the human body; the neck and the arms. You need to remain open-minded at all times, because there is always something to learn. One of the best tips that I have for leglocks or other submissions is to do much more positional sparring. This is so that you can take a chance, and if you make a mistake then you can simply restart. This will help with your confidence. For example, let’s say that  I am starting on top with open guard – if I pass, then good, I will restart. If I get a leglock, good, I shall restart. If I fall over and lose the legloc

How the Gracies breath when doing Jiu-Jitsu

Rickson Gracie and all members of the Gracie use a special method of breathing when doing Jiu-Jitsu: Percussive breathing. This involves  a normal inhalation followed by several short, sharp exhalations  (saying shh, shh, shh, shh, shh). ... The deeper you breathe, the more oxygen you bring into your system. Percussion is  a manual technique used by respiratory physiotherapists to help clear the chest of secretions (phlegm) . The physiotherapist will apply a rhythmical clapping motion upon the chest wall with a cupped hand to loosen the secretions from the sides of the lungs. How to do Percussive breathing: Inhale:  Inhale deeply, using accordion breathing. Accordion breathing is lateral chest breathing. Imagine that your rib cage is an accordion. On the inhale, the accordion expands laterally, and on the exhale, the accordion squeezes back together. Exhale:  Using percussive breathing, exhale for 5 beats (saying shh, shh, shh, shh, shh). Percussive breathing is forced exhalation usi

Why we train with GI in BJJ?

Training in a Gi opens up whole new systems on how to play the game. There are more techniques you can do with the Gi than without it. Certain submissions, such as the  cross choke or the bow and arrow choke , are impossible to do without the Gi. Some open guard positions, such as the lasso and spider guard, while possible, would be inefficient without it as well. You CAN formulate your own techniques and strategies in both Gi and No-Gi, but there are just simply more options with the Gi. More options mean more elaborate strategies. It is a great way to exercise your mind to keep you sharp and creative. A Teaching and a Learning Tool The Gi can be a very powerful tool for communication and learning. Your instructor will be able to give you specific, pinpoint instructions on where to grip, how to hold, and how to control your opponent. You will be able to understand the basic reactions of the human body, both the opponent’s and your own, much more clearly. When the communication betwe

Why your BJJ training partners are your best friends

5 reasons your BJJ training partners are your best friends. Common interests Some people have fishing buddies while others have friends who love the same bands. You and your BJJ buddies have jiu-jitsu. You will bond over trying out new techniques on each other, helping each other prepare for competitions, and sharing a niche interest that only you and they truly understand. Trust Each class or roll, you are basically trusting your well-being and ability to provide for your family with your training partner. Training is a bonding experience Brazilian jiu-jitsu isn’t easy. The warm ups can be brutal and round after round of training can leave your body hurting and gasping for air. Suffering and growing together is a bonding experience, though. That is why law school stud

Rafael Mendes details his training methods for more power and endurance

  1. Three-minute rounds “I do 15 rounds of three minutes each without resting between rounds. The goal is to win all rounds and use a lot of power into them. Short rounds make the match more equal, even against lower ranked opponents, so I have to be fast and powerful to win.” 2. Ten-minute rounds “I also like to do 6 to 8 rounds of ten minutes without resting. The goal is to reach the submission without resting so I can keep moving. This is the kind of training that increases my endurance.” 3. Specific training of attack positions “Another thing I do are rounds of 1 minute in 10 different attack situations: side control, mount, back taking without the hooks, etc. All that without resting between the one-minute rounds. The goal is to get the submission each and every time. I do that four times with five minutes of resting between sessions.” 4. Specific training of defense positions “Same training we use to attack, but now focusing on the defense. The goal is to escape in one minute or

Rafael Mendes: "I Don’t Like Takedowns but Still Had To Train Them"

Rafael Mendes was honest and said that he didn’t really like takedowns. When Budo Jake asked him, the world champion said he prefers to work from his back, inverting and working in scrambles. This doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have good takedowns. Rafael was Brazilian National wrestling champion so he has a very good wrestling level. His professor Ramon Lemos always had him work takedowns but at the end of the day his strategy in competition is to either pull guard or wait until his opponent pulls guard. Gordon Ryan shared how much money he would have made from competition in 2021 if he was healthy…

For everyone who thinks I’m just faking my stomach. I was just doing some calculations for my taxes and… If I was healthy enough to compete all year, I was set to make another 180k just with competitions, win or lose, 180k. I left it on the table because it’s unprofessional for me to compete in the physical state I’m in right now. Let’s hope this year is better. Gordon Ryan also added that it’s time to turn BJJ into a more “professional” sport: Also, let’s talk about how embarrassing it is that an athlete in our sport, sitting where I am, can’t even make a quarter million [dollars] a year competing 6 times. We need to do better, we need to be more exciting, we need more eyes on the sport, and I can’t do it alone, especially not unhealthy. Let’s make this ADCC the turning point in our sport. From amateur… To professional. Casa De Luta FightKlub Saarbrücken (Eingang im Hinterhof) Mainzer Str. 30 66111 Saarbrücken Email: acasadeluta@gmail.com Startseite - bjjsaarbruecken.de
