Rickson Gracie "My biggest goal now is to win without a fight.”

The Gracies are the first family of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Rickson is considered the best of them all. Helio Gracie, Rickson’s father, launched the martial art through challenge matches at his family’s academies in Rio de Janeiro. But it has grown—thanks to Rickson and his many brothers and cousins—into a global phenomenon embraced by everyone from MMA fighters to Hollywood actors to celebrity chefs to suburban kids in need of an after-school activity. The Gracies are responsible for everything from the four-billion-dollar Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) empire to the Brazilian jiu-jitsu academies dotting the strip malls across America. On the perimeter of the mat are Rickson's wife, Cassia, and Rickson's cousin, Jean Jacques Machado, a legendary Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor and “one of the greatest jiu-jitsu teachers in the world” according to Rickson. Machado was born with only a thumb and part of a pinkie on his left hand, but it didn’t stop him from becoming a ch

Rickson Gracie "Breathe: A Life in Flow"

Vieles davon

ALISTAIR OVEREEM: “PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING IS STUPID”

ALISTAIR OVEREEM: “PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING IS STUPID” It was on that occasion that he was a guest at Ariel Helwani’s “MMA Hour”, who recalled his fight against Lesnar. Helwani then asked Overeem about his stance towards professional wrestling and its fans. Alistair responded: I’ll explain how things are with me. I watched it when I was eight or ten. Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, I was a big fan of those guys. Great and fun, as was Andre The Giant. I stopped watching after that, so I don’t watch from somewhere in 1992, 1993, maybe 1994. And lately, I’ve started watching a little bit on YouTube. Oh my God, that looks pathetic. It’s pathetic what the guys are doing. It’s fake, it’s pathetic, it’s stupid. It makes absolutely  no sense . As Helwani expressed disbelief to this and other claims, he tried to stop Overeem in his thinking. But Alistair continued: It’s pathetic and it’s not a sport at all. It’s bad acting, poor bad acting. I apologize to all the fans, but I’m honest and I give m

Gordon Ryan Gives Health Update "Return to Competition?"

I just visited with a doctor  @mojassim80   recommended and he did the most thorough and advanced testing there is. I have a follow up call with him on Friday to discuss the results, but after a phone conference with my amazing people over at  @ways2well , it seems pretty certain we have a rock solid diagnosis AND and solid treatment. The cause of this was prolonged antibiotic use for staph infections. I was caught in a vicious cycle where I would have staph and use antibiotics, they would kill the good bacteria in my stomach and bad bacteria and yeast started to overgrow. Naturally, my body tried to address that and fight that issue, making me more susceptible to infections, meaning more staph, meaning more antibiotics, meaning more damage to my stomach. The issue is that I have a massive yeast and bacterial overgrowth so big that it is now starting to affect my kidney functions. Some of my levels were 50x what they were supposed to be. This back up in my small intestines is apparentl

Mauricio Shogun Rua remembers the 10 years of UFC Rio 1

Event held in 2011 has its anniversary this Friday, and Curitiba recalls victory over Forrest Griffin in rematch: "20 years from now I will remember this moment". On that August 27, 2011, the Ultimate was returning to Brazil for the first time since it held an event in the country in 1998. The star-studded card in Rio de Janeiro at UFC 134 featured Anderson Silva defeating Yushin Okami in the main fight and big names in Brazilian MMA. Responsible for the co-main event, Maurício Shogun rematched Forrest Griffin, his opponent in his debut in the organization, in 2007 and was one of the protagonists when he knocked out the American in 1m53s of the fight. For Shogun, the holding of UFC Rio 1 was the cornerstone of the popularization of MMA in Brazil. The fighter recalled that, during the whole week of the event, many fans went to the hotel where the fighters were staying to ask for pictures and autographs. - I have only good memories and, in my opinion, it was the great watersh

Rodrigo Minotauro remembers the 10 years of UFC Rio 1

From the drama of surgeries to the knockout: on the day the event completes ten years, Minotauro recounts memories of debuting in Brazil and tells Anderson Silva's request for him to quit. I was one of the best fighters at heavyweight from 2001 to 2008. I was champion of Pride, of the UFC, I was on top. In 2010, when I lost to Cain Velásquez, I realized that I couldn't train anymore. I could feel my hip, the same problem as Guga (Kuerten). I couldn't move well, jump, I lost 40% of my performance. In a standing fight, you have to get into your opponent and get out without getting hit. It is the moral of the fight. And I didn't have stability, I couldn't do it, I was wobbly. I looked into what was going on, and I ended up at the greatest hip specialist at the time, Dr. Marc Philippon. I was in Vail, Colorado (USA), with a bad head, in depression, because he said that my hip was broken on both sides. When I was run over by a truck as a child, I injured my pelvis, bro

Dillon Danis asks to set up a grappling match with Demian Maia

Dillon Danis is a BJJ world champion and up-and-coming MMA fighter. Danis – best-known for serving as a BJJ coach and training partner for UFC icon Conor McGregor – is also notorious for his persona and trash talk in the MMA world. Danis’ latest target appears to be BJJ legend and UFC veteran Demian Maia. After his contract with the UFC ended with his most recent fight in June 2021, Maia has expressed his desire to compete in one last MMA bout, preferably in the UFC. Furthermore, Maia has also emphasized that he’d like to compete in submission grappling matches in organizations such as Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground. After contract termination, Demian Maia is removed from the UFC rankings

At 43, the Brazilian made the last fight of his contract in June, when he lost to Belal Muhammad, but still wants a farewell fight in the organization. Demian Maia was ranked 11th in the UFC's middleweight (up to 77kg) ranking, but is now officially out of the list. At 43 years old, the fighter from São Paulo ended his contract with the Ultimate in June, when he made his last fight, having lost to Belal Muhammad. With no contract renewal so far, his name has now been removed in this week's update. Demian, who has fought for the middleweight and middleweight belts in the UFC, still dreams of fighting one more fight in the organization. Since his defeat to Muhammad, the Brazilian has said in interviews that he would still like to return once more to the octagon, and has chosen some ideal rivals, such as Nate Diaz or Donald Cerrone. At this moment, even though Demian's desire remains the same, there is no open negotiation with the UFC. Demian has a record of 28 wins and 11 l

John Danaher "Your mind is your greatest weapon"

Your mind is your greatest weapon - but your legs are a close second: We’ve all had the disconcerting experience of grappling against someone far stronger than ourselves. It’s a bad feeling when your opponents hands easily peel off your best grips and pull out of your best holds. Whenever you feel outgunned in strength - it’s time to use your basic knowledge of the human body in your favor. No matter how much stronger your opponents hands and arms may be than your hands and arms - his hands and arms are not stronger than your legs. Make it a fight of your legs against his arms and you can realistically beat stronger people. The best place for you start this study is submission holds that directly match your legs against an opponents head and arm - and the triangle is king of this. Make it central to your training - and more importantly - central to your JIU JITSU MINDSET. THINK in these terms and you will begin to ACT in these terms, and then you may start to surprise yourself when g

John Danaher "Learning to fly - and fall"

Learning to fly - and fall: Even if you are a grappler who generally avoids standing position in favor of ground work, at some point you are going to get picked up and thrown hard into the mat - there is no getting around this. Learning to take the impact of a hard throw and get back into grappling with minimum fuss and interruption is very important. Failure to absorb the impact well will at best leave you discombobulated and easy to attack in the immediate aftermath of the throw and ; at worst, get you some time in hospital. Beginners are usually taught some simple solo drills that do a good job of showing how to distribute the impact on to a big surface area of the body and direct that impact onto parts of the body well suited for hard impact - that is what will protect you from harm. At some point however, you have to go beyond the solo drills and actually get thrown if you are to be able to apply your knowledge under the pressure and stress of hard competitive sparring. I know man

Victor John Morton won thought matches at the age of 56!!

Victor John Morton, an amazing inspiration for all of us!  They say age ain’t nothing but a number, and every time 56-year-old Victor Morton competes on the Catch Wrestling stage, he proves the accuracy of this theory. Competing in a Full Combat Wrestling Exhibition match, Morton took on the much younger competitor, Isaiah Deonarain. Deonarian showed no compassion throughout the battle, landing multiple leg and hand strikes on Morton. However, unfazed by the striking onslaught, Morton was able to close the distance on Deonarain to securing numerous takedowns. The takedowns and his old man strength would set the stage to the demise of Deonarian, as Morton secured  the Pin in Round 2 and 3 of the contest, which got a standing ovation from those in attendance, as he emerged the winner.
