BJJ Saarbrücken: "The Last Samurai" Kron Gracie
" With the universe, the more you help, the more you are at service, the better you will become, no matter what it is that you do. It is all somehow connected." - Kron Gracie
Kron Gracie is a Brazillian-American mixed martial artist who currently competes in the UFC featherweight division. Before entering mixed martial arts, he had been practicing "Brazillian Jiu-jitsu" since a very young age, and had competed against some of the best practitioners in the world. It's not uncommon to learn that the general public don't know who he is, since he isn't a
big talker like McGregor.
However, after being exposed to the life principles and wisdom he has ingrained in his authentic lifestyle through documentaries and highlight reels, I firmly believe that there exist a fountain of lessons that we can all derive from his attitute towards life.
1." Ice Cream Kron " ( Stay Cool Under Pressure )
" There are always feelings you get a week before a fight, a day before a fight, or two hours before a fight, but I've always been to focus on what's necessary and stay cool under pressure. " - Kron Gracie
There's a reason why they call him " Ice Cream Kron ".
Just by carrying the Gracie family name, and being the son of the great Rickson Gracie he had been conditioned to perform under full attention of the crowd from a very young age. The unfathomable amount of pressure he had to deal with whilst facing adversity is truly fascinating, and goes to his ability to stay cool underpressure.
This is an ability that we humans are gravitated towards to. We admire those who deal with overhelming adversity, fellings, andpressure, with a cool and calm demeanor. It is good to remind oneself that, under overwhelming situations as such, onemust keep one´s own focus on those things that are necessary and important.
2. Sacrifice in one domain, will make you better in all walks of life.
" The more in life you sacrifice in one direction, no matter what it is, it makes you better as a person, and I don't know why, I don't know what, its just the way with the universe." - Kron Gracie
It is importantly useful to know a way in which the "universe" may work in your favor, since there's a WHOLE lot of the universe, and then there's you.
I came across Kron's wisdom when I was listening to his post-fight interview, after his UFC debut win against Alex Caceres. He was asked about why he was still teaching little kids, as opposed to solely focusing on his MMA training, to which he replied by explaining the way in which everythingt is connected, and that his MMA may improve in some way from the lessons he give to the kids.
The main message is; being at service in one domain will be rewarded by the "universe" through your overall betterment as a person.
So, an example may be setting some time everyday to exercise. What is apparent is its health benefits. However, you will be better overall by the sacrifice that you have made. It may help you in your career, your relationships, and your overall experience of life in some way.
"It is all somehow connected" - Kron Gracie
3.Balance.
There is time to work, and there is timeto recover. There is time for consciousness, and there is time for unconsciousness. There is time we experience pain, and there is time we experience pleasure. Our lives are built up on fundamental principlkes that are universal acrosstime and across cultures. One of them is the balance in everything.
Now, an application of this specific knowledge to our lives may be our constant supervision of when we lose sight of the balance between our responsibilities / service and those things that make life worth living. The consequence of not paying sufficient respect to this balance is quite detrimental. If you are living day-to-day solely on themomentum of your responsabilities, itis easyto lose sight of those things that makelife worth living. And this itself will turn you into a robot that does its work, monotonously and routinely. A life filled with only pleasure and enjoyment will make you indistinguishable to a beast operating under its drives, and aimless in regards to the pursuits of life.
That optimal balance is important. Although the line isn't universal, and quite blurry. But then, knowing where we stand in regards to that line itself is another battlewe face.
It is to know how we are feeling, and to align it with our thinking, before then acting upon them.
"Better learn balance. Balance is key. Balance good, karate good. Everything good. Balance bad, better pack up, go home. Understand?" - Mr. Miyagi
Below, you can get a glimpse to the life of Kron Gracie himself.
Here we can see how he has incorporated balance in his life, as he:
1. Trained vigorously during the day with small snacks to sustain him throughout his training sessions, but then made "eating and friends" his main priority in the evening.
2. His morning triathlon training was set outdoors in the beach, while his evening MMA training is set indoors in his gym.
3. He spent most of the day alone, but then trained and ate with others in the evening.
